A Worthwhile Endeavor
To the Editor:
I found out about the Cell Phones for Soldiers when I was watching the NBC Nightly News in August of 2004. The program was started by two young teenagers in Massachusetts.
The program recycles old cell phones and, with the proceeds, purchases phone cards for soldiers overseas. Because soldiers do not have access to personal phones or cheap calling rates, this program gives our soldiers the tools they need to contact family and friends at home.
I think that giving our armed forces so much with so little effort is not just a kind gesture but a responsibility; I am proud to have led the effort of Garden City High School to help our soldiers. Our successful collection of nearly 200 phones is a phenomenal end to a worthwhile endeavor.
