McCormick on the defense. Tuesday, May 16 at the USMMA was the venue for the quarterfinal match-up against Lynbrook. Garden City was all business as the Lynbrook net kept ballooning under a deluge of Trojan scoring. The “Maroon and Grey” took a commanding 5-1 first quarter lead. Joey Howard saved his best for late in the season scoring three times with isolation goals at midfield. GC continued the pressure taking an 8-2 halftime lead. Brad Horn and John Capatani combined for 8 saves as the Trojan defense shut the door. Tim Hay posted 4 assists leading a balanced attack with 7 Trojans registering goals. Attackmen Rob Engelke and Dean Gibbons registered “Hat Tricks.” Terry Kennedy, Brian Holman, Greg Daly and Hay posted a goal each to complete the GC scoring. Garden City added 4 unanswered third period goals to take a 12-2 lead. The final whistle blew and GC walked off with a 13-2 victory and one step closer to the county finals.

The Warriors were looking to bounce back from a prior 9-4 late season loss to GC. NOT TODAY!! The Trojans drew first blood and took a 3-0 first period lead. The physical Wantagh squad kept the contest in reach as the half ended 7-3. Justin Lynch won 16 of 22 face-offs leading to a 9-goal rout in the third period to take a 16-4 lead. Lynch sent the Black and Gold a message after being pounded at the midfield, Justin reminded Wantagh of Trojan toughness as he raised himself off the pitch and glanced at the opposition bench. Brian Holman’s 4 goals and 2 assists led the GC scorers. Holman’s last goal drew the attention of a double team on the crease sending Brian to the ground. An ankle sprain retired Brian for the remainder of the game. The team wishes Holman a speedy recovery. The attack combined for 9 goals. Tim Hay (3G, 3A) Dean Gibbons (3G) and Rob Engelke (3G) orchestrated the offense seeing 7 GC players scoring. Brad Horn registered 6 saves as Dave Nugent, Phil Palmeri, Kerry McCormick and Brian Mullooly sent the Wantagh offense packing. Terry Kennedy (2G), Joe Howard and “FOGO” Justin Lynch rounded out the scoring.
