Varsity Lacrosse Gains
Greg Daly draws the double team.
The Garden City varsity lacrosse team gained their fourteenth victory of the 2005 season avenging last years loss in the playoffs to Wantagh. Ranked #6 in the nation according to laxpower.com, the Trojans extended their record to 14-1 overall and 8-1 in league competition.
Rob Engelke dented the net early in the first quarter to start things rolling for the Trojans. Garden City jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the second period when Dean Gibbons (2G, 1A) found Tim Hay (2G) on the crease for an easy tally. Justin Lynch’s dominance at the face off position was critical to the Trojan victory. “FOGO” Lynch won an incredible 13 out of 16 face offs creating numerous fast break opportunities.

Wantagh’s physical game kept GC off balance and answered with two second quarter goals to end the half with GC on top 4-2. The Trojans were able to capitalize on numerous Wantagh penalties scoring on five out of their first six man-up situations. Both teams traded goals as Wantagh closed within one goal to end the third period 5-4 with GC in the lead.
The Trojan defense anchored by Brad Horn (11 saves) repeatedly stuffed the Wantagh attack. Defensemen Philip Palmeri, Dave Nugent, Brian Mullooly, and Kerry McCormick shut out Wantagh in the fourth period. Andrew McMillan’s goal off a Robert Engelke (2G, 2A) feed during a two-man advantage followed by Dean Gibbon’s goal seconds later catapulted GC to 4 unanswered fourth quarter goals. Brian Holman’s unassisted goal with 3:37 left in the game ended the GC scoring. Wantagh’s frustration in the fourth quarter saw the home team repeatedly in the penalty box. The gold and black was unable to control the ball in their offensive zone for more than 30 seconds in the last 12 minutes. The Trojans man-up team held the ball for the remaining two minutes to end the game with a 9-4 victory. Joe Howard (1G) rounded out the Trojan scoring.
