Fourth Straight For 4th Grade Girls

The threat of rain was the biggest uncertainty as the 4th grade girls white lacrosse team took the field against Carle Place this past Saturday at breezy St. Paul's. A three game win streak was the tailwind behind the team as they got ready for the Pre-Mother's Day contest.

The confidence from these victories was quickly evident as Caitlin Mallon converted a pass from Maggie Bill in the second minute of the game. Garden City's relentless pressure at the midfield from Mackenzie Horl and face-off middie Niki Berkery translated into two Kelsey Tierney goals assisted by Kerry Adams and Horl. Maggie Bill added a score to the first quarter with GC leading 4 - 0.

The second quarter showcased Garden City's solid defense anchored by goal tender Brianna Connetta. Aided by defenders Kim Townsend, Haley Newlin-Wagner and Cara Stapleford, Connetta continually repelled Carle Place's attempts to get back in the ball game. Although Carle Place managed to score midway through the quarter, Garden City answered with two more Kelsey Tierney goals from passes by Niki Berkery and Kerry Adams to preserve the comfortable lead.

Taylor Pappas extended this lead to 7 - 1 early in the third quarter off a pass from MacKenzie Horl. Replacement goalie Cara Stapleford kept that margin in tact with defensive help from Morgan Taylor and Katie Rizzo.

When the fourth quarter commenced, Carle Place made it clear that they had no intentions of quitting. Three quick goals brought the score to 7 - 4 and reminded the crowd that the game was not over. But the composed Garden City squad eliminated all doubt by tallying 2 unassisted goals, Kelsey Tierney's fifth of the game and Caitlin Mallon's second. The final score was Garden City 9, Carle Place 4.
