In Memoriam Walter F. Bachelder
Walter Frederick Bachelder, known as Fred, age 86, died at St. Catherine's Hospital in Smithtown, New York on Monday, May 9st, 2005 of heart failure. He was born November 12, 1918 in Holyoke, Massachusetts to Walter Frederick Bachelder of Palmira Maine and Julia Selma Schniewind Bachelder of Whitestone, New York. His father was a descendant of the Rev. Stephen Bachelor, one of the first colonists of Hampton, New Hampshire. His maternal great grandfather, Gustav A. Schniewind was U.S. Vice Consul at Dusseldorf. He attended Deerfield Academy, Dartmouth College and Tuck Business School. He enlisted in the army during World War II and after finishing his tour of duty, was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the O.S.S. He spent the next two years with partisan units in North Africa, Italy and Yugoslavia. He was awarded three bronze stars among other honors.
In 1947 he entered the family business Testing Machines Inc, headquartered on Long Island. He assumed control of the company in 1957 from his maternal uncle Hans Zanders Schniewind of Whitestone, New York. Over the course of his presidency, he traveled widely, developing a marketing and manufacturing network for physical properties testing equipment and international manufacturing standards. In 1964 he was part of a joint task force coordinated between the US State Department and the Israeli government to promote the implementation of international standards in Israeli industry. In 1980, at the invitation of the Chinese Manufacturing Association of Beijing, he addressed the same issues of coordinating and implementing international manufacturing standards in Chinese goods for the global market. He resigned the Presidency in 1997 but maintained his position as Chairman of the Board and stayed active in all policy decisions.
He was a member of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) and Served on the Board of Directors of The Association of Pulp and Paper Industries (TAPPI); At his death he was still a member of The New York Athletic Club and a lifetime member of the St. George's Bicycle Club, St. George, Bermuda.
He is survived by his wife Joan Sullivan Bachelder; his children Susan P. Bachelder of Egremont, Mass., Sally B. Keil of Woodstock, Ct, her husband Carl and two sons, Andrew and Fletcher; John H. Bachelder of Woodbridge, Ct, his wife Marilyn and two sons, Philip and Michael; his sister Julia B. Bachelder of South Hadley, Mass.; Nicholas and JoAnn Sullivan and two daughters, Nicole and Erin, Frank and Darlene Sullivan and three daughters, Amanda, Shannon and Sarah, John and Lisa Sullivan and five children, James, Daniel, Sean, Kali and Cassi, Patrick Sullivan and Sally Sullivan LoCasio and her husband Christopher. He is further survived by Henry Watson Goldhorn, Mary Lou and Louis Azzara, Jeanette and John Martino and Francis Spinelli and other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Ann Goldhorn of Garden City and Northport, New York.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 10am in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. A private burial will be in Holyoke Mass.
