Math-a-Thon Benefits Hospital

Sixth-grade students at the Garden City Middle School recently participated in a Math-a-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Participants completed a Math Fun Book consisting of 250 problems and solicited sponsors for their mathematical efforts.
On April 18 th an awards assembly was held and a certificate was awarded to all who participated. Students who raised $35 received a T-shirt and a free pass to Six Flags Great Adventure. Those who raised over $75 received a tote bag in addition to the previous awards. Emily Westerman, who solicited $653, was awarded a CD player as top fund-raiser. The students raised a total of $17,305.51!

Mrs. Orrego, Mrs. Corcoran and Mr. Hakes’ team raised $2602. The top three fund-raisers were: Barbara Sullivan with $250, Alexa Kentfield with $275, Brian Emmert with $460.
Mrs. Trousdell, Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Rumbelow’s team raised $2793. The top 3 fund-raisers were: Brian Cunningham with $180, Matt O’Connor with $240, and Caroline Goldschein with $258.90.
Mrs. Schwartz, Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Egan’s team raised $3112. The top 3 fund-raisers were: Gloria DiMino with $140, Walter Levchuck with $160, and Heather Arning with $185.
Mr. Pollit, Mrs. Petro and Mrs. Reide’s team raised $3644.
The top 3 fund-raisers were Mike Mongelli with $200.10, Alex Woinich with $250 and Brian Noonan with $260.
Dr. Natali, Mrs. Fusci and Mrs. Shea’s team raised $4395. The top 3 fund-raisers were Jenna Cusumano with $240, Victoria Aldrich with $260, and the top fund-raiser of the sixth grade, who won the CD player, was Emily Westerman. She raised $653!
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, treats 160 patients every day on an outpatient basis and maintains 566 inpatient beds. Middle School students raised money to help children with catastrophic diseases.
