Victoria makes a move to steal a ball from Albertson.Victoria makes a move to steal a ball from Albertson. There is an old sport adage that simply says "speed kills". The GC Daredevils proved on Saturday that there is great truth in that simple statement. After suffering through a winter that overstayed its welcome the Daredevils exploded out of their homes and on to the Nassau Haven soccer field. While the inclement weather prevented them from getting in many of their practices it couldnšt take away their natural athleticism. They used their speed and instincts to defeat a very well coached Albertson team 4-0 to win their season opener.

For most of the 1st half a strong defense by both teams kept the game scoreless. On several occasions Albertson looked to have a break away only to end up surrounded by Daredevils within seconds. Elizabeth "Biddy" Furman was a human tornado breaking up Albertson offense all day long. Brynne Murphy did an outstanding job of clearing several threatening attacks with booming kicks. Victoria Piscopo showed great speed and stamina tracking down a number of breakaways from behind. Taylor Pappas continued where she left off last year with her smart play and good ball handling.

Kelsey with another great save!Kelsey with another great save! Deep into the 1st half Maggie Bill took a crossing pass from Courtney Studdert to score the only goal of the half. With the lead the GC Daredevils opened up their attack. Halfbacks Courtney Studdert, Jacqueline Jahelka, Jane Frumberg and Lucy Donahue won their one on one battles to keep the ball on the Albertson side of the field. The pressure created an opening for Carly Knowles who scored to give the Daredevils 2-0 led. The highlight of the day came when Maggie Bill took a pass from Carly Knowles and rifled a left foot shot into the net from about 25 yards out. The final goal game when Courtney Studdert fed Carly Knowles a pass in front of the goal.

Victoria, Carly and Courtney lead the charge on a breakaway. Victoria, Carly and Courtney lead the charge on a breakaway. As important as the 4 is in the score so is the 0. Kelsey Tierney, once again shutout another team. Her spectacular play in goal is becoming so common that we have to remind ourselves that she is a special goalie. If we forget, the opposing coaches will surely remind us as the Albertson coach did.

Taylor breaks up an attack by Albertson.Taylor breaks up an attack by Albertson. All around it was a great effort to defeat an Albertson team that the GC Daredevils had struggled against twice last season. Congratulations and good luck with the rest of the season.
