Fencing Championships At GCHS

2005-04-15 / Sports

The United States Fencing Association North Atlantic Section Senior Championships will be held at Garden City High School on Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1, from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. The best fencers from the entire North East would be flocking here to Garden City in their quest to qualify for the USFA Summer National Championships in Sacramento this summer.

The United States Fencing Association (USFA) is accredited by the US Olympic Committee (USOC) as the official National Governing Body (NGB) for the Olympic sport of Fencing in the United States. Each year the USFA holds its Summer National Fencing Championships the first week in July.

The USFA is divided into Sections and Divisions for qualifying purposes to the Summer Nationals. This year, it is the Long Island Division’s turn to host the USFA North Atlantic Section Senior Championships. The North Atlantic Section is made up of all of New York State except for NYC and all of New England. LI Division last hosted these Championships at Brentwood HS about 7 years ago. Last year they were hosted by the University of Rochester in the Western NY Division and travel the Section yearly on a rotating basis.

Hosting the North Atlantic Section Championships at Garden City HS will be a big boost to our growing High School Fencing Program. The best fencers from the entire North Atlantic Section will be coming into our building to compete and our students can both watch and compete with them. The Championships is open to any member of the North Atlantic Section of the USFA who is age 13 or older. Many of our fencers (Liz and Kevin Oliver, Jess Hancock and others) have competed in the Section Championships before and gone on to fence at Summer Nationals. What a thrill it will be for them to be the host and what an opportunity for our newer fencers!

Admission for spectators is free!
