Mustang Madness
On Saturday April 2, 2005 Garden City BU-16 Mustangs hosted the Plainedge Metrostars in the State Cup first round game. The wind gusts were fierce and the rain subsided around noon but the referee was no where to be found. Both teams had warmed up only to wait for the official to arrive. The Mustangs scored six unanswered goals and coasted to the next round. The forwards Alex Buck, Matt Colantonio and Manny Messina were pumped and ready to go. The Midfielder Sebastian Gomez, Chris Dioguardi, Dan Lisoski, RJ Giamboi, Chris Pirog and Justin Kirschner played with determination and utilized the passing lanes to create scoring opportunities. The goalie, Kevin Volpe had 5 tough saves for his first shut out of the season. The defensive unit Brian Wysocki, Chris Ciaffa, Blaise Ancona, Chris Agiato and James Ladner stifled the Metros attack. The Mustangs hit the ground running and quickly capitalized in the 3rd minute. RJ found Manny inside the eighteen where Manny drove the ball in the net 1-0. In the 28th minute Alex beats a defender on the left crosses to RJ who cracks a shot passed the keeper 2-0. Late in the first half Chris A. intercepts a Plainedge clearing attempt and dribbles thru traffic and lines a shot into the back of the net 3-0. The Mustangs were dominating time of possession and out shot the Metrostars 8 to 3 in the first half. Garden City kepted the momentum going with great teamwork in the second half. Dan serves the ball in the box and Manny quickly rips a shot 4-0. The Metro take a corner kick that Kevin stops the attack and punts the ball to Alex whose speed is hard to stop. Alex one on one beats the goalie 5-0. Dan steals the ball looks and finds Manny who scores again his third goal of the game The Mustangs constant pressure gave the opponents a tough time throughout the match.. The Garden City boys played a superb defensive style game limiting the Metrostars opportunities. The head coach John Fodera, and assistant Mike Volpe were happy to see the player's start the season with a Win.
