Golden Eagles U11 Girls Open With Victory

Any victory in Division I soccer is a victory to be savored, and so the Garden City Golden Eagles' 3-2 opening win over the Bethpage Blue Rage last Saturday at St. Paul's was one to feel good about.

The U11 Golden Eagles twice led by two goals only to see Bethpage battle back. Catherine Dickinson scored twice in the first half to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead. Just before the end of the half, the Blue Rage made it 2-1.

Bethpage put pressure on in the second half, but was thwarted by keeper Christina Mangels' efforts, and some great clear-out play by Kimberly Ryan, Srey Powers and Caitlin McGuinness.

About 10 minutes into the second half, Kristen Steinhardt scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Golden Eagles when she was Johnny-on-the-spot to the left of the goal to drive home a rebound.

The Blue Rage scored later in the second half to make it 3-2, and that's the way it ended. The Golden Eagles got solid contributions from Ali Rozea, Catherine McTiernan, Alexandra Bruno, Gabby Giannone, Tate McLaughlin and Tracy Rendano.

The Golden Eagles host the Levittown Lightning this Saturday at St. Paul's. Game time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
