On Sunday, April 10, the 10 yr old Garden City Girls Rams White won their home opening game against a very aggressive and talented Huntington team. It was a perfect spring day full of sunshine as the girls took to the field. The girls were as anxious to play just as the flowers were anxious to bloom after a long cold winter. The first quarter showed how the girls were patient by sticking to their positions and feeling out their opponents. Huntington momentarily went up 2-0, (which was the only time they lead in the entire game), but the GC girls gracefully came back to end the quarter 3-2. Two insurance goals were added in the second quarter and 3 more goals in the 3rd. The Huntington team battled back with 4 goals but it was not enough to defeat the GC girl's determination to win. The final score was 8-6. The GC attack was lead by Kelsey Tierney (4 goals), Mackenzie Horl (2 goals, 2 assists), Maggie Bill (1 goal, 2 assists), Erin Greiner (first year player with 1 goal 1 assist), Kerry Adams (1 assist) and Erin McGowen (1 assist). The goaltending duties were shared between Erin Vierengle and Brianna Conetta who both stopped numerous hard shots on goal by the Huntington's hammering offence. First year players, Morgan Taylor and Cara Stapleford were outstanding completing passes on offence and scooping loose balls. "HARD WORK PAYS OFF" is the motto for this young team Coach Tierney was quoted. Some of the girls played in an indoor lacrosse league over the winter which developed and improved their skills dramatically. They were the youngest team in the league playing against 11 and 12 year old girls who were much bigger, stronger and faster. The girls played hard and never gave up. At the end of the game Coach Tierney and Coach Adams presented the OFFENCE award to Maggie Bill, the DEFENCE award to Adrie Chistensen (first year player) and the HUSTLE award to Mackenzie Horl.
