John Tarzian with the ground ball
The Cox, D’Antonio and Randi sixth grade lacrosse team hosted with what appeared to be the Wantagh JV team. Looking up at the behemoths from the south shore, GC had its work cut out for them. Both teams traded blows as the first period ended 0-0. Midfielders Ryan Fitzsimmons (9GB), James Raphael, Ed Schwendemann, Joe Vione, John Tarzian (5GB) and Peter Loher hustle between the restraining lines kept GC in the contest. First half goalie Brian Noonan turned back the black and gold attack posting 3 saves. Attackmen Jack Manning, Mike D’Antonio, Joe Horn, James Tarzian and Christian Knoch had a tough day finding the net. Numerous scoring attempts sailed high or were thwarted by the Wantagh netkeeper. The defense of Tim Dooley, Dan McCallan, Matt Slovensky and Jake Galasso kept the opposition in check as the first half ended with the Rams down 1-0. Wantagh’s size was the difference as the visitors tacked on 3 unanswered tallies in the third period to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Frank McGoldrick hung tough in the net and shut the door in the fourth period. GC had chances but was unable to break the plane until the last minute of the game. Griffin McQuilling beat his defender behind the cage, rolled the crease and finished with a rocket in the upper corner of the net to end the scoring with GC on the short end 4-1.
Matt Slovensky 4, Dan McCallan 96, Tim Dooley 25 and Brian Noonan 62
The Rams hope to run it around traveling to Cold Spring Harbor to play games on Saturday and Sunday.
