GC Rams Sixth Grade Lacrosse
The Cox, D'Antonio and Randi's sixth grade lacrosse team opened the season home hosting Rockville Centre. A physical first period set the tone for the contest. RVC delivered some big hits trying to intimidate the Rams. Matt Slovensky answered back by taking out one of the opposition attackman with a body check that was heard three fields over. Both teams had a tough time finding the net as a late first quarter goal put the visitors up 1-0. Tim Dooley, Dan McCallan and Slovensky's great defense shut off the inside game. A depleted squad forced some jumbling with the midfield lines. Brandon Badgett, Peter Lohrer, Mike D'Antonio and Ed Schwendemann's determination, hustle and tight defense kept GC in the contest. Finding themselves with only four midfielders for much of the second half, these four gladiators ran to the point of shear exhaustion. A late second period goal by RVC ended the half with opposition on top.
John Tarzian who found himself on the canvas more times than the Bayonne Bleeder in a Muhammed Ali fight, had his usual strong game. John put the Rams on the board with an unassisted goal off the isolation play early in the second half. James Tarzian, Brian Noonan, Christian Knock and Joe Horan played steady ball control offense. GC hung tough as Rockville Centre scored their last goal midway into the third period to take a 3-1 lead. Ryan Fitzsimmon's gave every last breath, playing with the remnants of bronchitis. Begging to get back into the contest, the coaches had to physically remove Ryan from the playing field as he wheezed and coughed. These boys hung tough demonstrating their love of the game.
Not enough can be said about Frank McGoldrick who single handedly kept the Rams in the contest. Shutting the door, McGoldrick was the inspirational leader playing his best game to date and posting 12 saves. Commanding the goal cylinder and distributing great outlet passes, he cleared the ball effectively and kept the game in check. Early in the third period, John Tarzian found Joe Horan on the fast break. Horan dented the net with a shot to the upper left corner. The fourth quarter wore down the home team who were down to 11 players. The full visiting squad of 23 players was just too much for GC. The Rams came up short suffering a tough 3-2 loss. The boys should be proud of their effort. Hopefully the weather turns for the better and the boys can get back on track next week against Wantagh.
