Other Uses ForSt. Paul's To the Editor:
Carl Dincesen Science Teaching Important To the Editor: I would like to thank everyone who signed the petition to bring back science as a special to the primary schools. Dr. Leitman and the board members received copies of the petition before the budget meeting last week. Unfortunately, the superintendent and the board are not planning on taking any action to reinstate the teaching of science in the primary schools. They feel the cost of $70,000 (the last science teacher's salary) for the year is too high. They did not consider trying to work with the teacher's union to find a way to craft a viable and cost-effective solution to this issue. Many people who signed the petition were upset that a program enjoyed by the children was cut from the budget last year without warning. It was frequently mentioned by parents as their child's favorite program in kindergarten and first grade. No one is suggesting that a first grader is going to win an Intel Scholarship based on some in-depth research undertaken in primary school. However, children in these grades are beginning to form interests that will last for years to come. It is relatively easy to make science a fun and entertaining subject for our schoolchildren, and thereby kindle an interest in science that will serve them and others in the years to come. Garden City School District likes to compare themselves with other top school districts on Long Island such as Great Neck and Jericho. All of these districts have special science teachers in the primary grades. These districts realize the importance and value of science. However, Garden City UFSD will take the usual approach and hope that the parents fill this educational gap as they have been asked to do time and again for other gaps in the curriculum that have appeared over the years. Jeanne & Bill Bice Thank You Parents To the Editor: Thanks to the class of 2005 parents, the twelfth grade party was a success to say the very least. Our senior class had an eventful night provided by the support of many senior parents. The "buzz" from the students throughout the school was quite positive. Master of ceremonies, Brian Gold and Steve Paladino, did a terrific rendition of Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey. Their collaboration entertained our seniors throughout the night. Skit coordinators, Robin & Tom Butler and Maria Ward, did a tremendous job directing over 150 parents. Your time, skillful direction and patience made for a memorable evening for our students. Our principal, Mr. Hardy, made a special appearance as well, and yes he looks great in a Lily p. skirt! Special thanks to Marie & Roy Kleshefsky, Jill Palmeri, and Mary Ellen lee for your coordination efforts and donations. Also to Linda & Brian Gold, who donated 20 TVs to our senior for door prizes. And of course, all the parents who provided food, beverages and generous donations. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.
