Community Club Play Reviews
L to R:Joan Afflerback, Willa Ward, Bea Mercadante, Marye Heston and Marjorie Maher
At the annual Play Reviews Program of the Community Club held Wednesday March 16
th - it would be fair to say not much from the Broadway scene was excluded.
Moderator Bea Mercadante gave an overview, noting that musicals are still a huge money-maker. That is - unless it fails as large. What's playing?
The panelists -
Joan Afflerback - reviewed "The Glass Menagerie" "McCreel" and "Twelve Angry Men." Powerful!
Willa Ward - reviewed "Wicked," a two-year favorite.
Pacific Overtures - Stephen Sondhein music
Rivals - an old Sheridan classic
Marye Heston - reviewed "Democracy" by Michael Frayn and "Doubt" - two very strong and serious plays.
"Dame Edna" and Jackie Mason - light and popular entertainment.
Marjorie Maher - a timely look at Broadway's alternative Long Island theaters. What an array! College campuses - small theater companies giving us an exciting way to compensate for expensive New York.
The large audience enjoyed the panelists. A lovely tea hour followed. Bravo!
