Socially Speaking With Athena

It was a grey, cold Easter Sunday, but there was a good turn out at all of the many churches in town and also for the Easter Parade of all those beautiful old cars. I took a look at most of them in the staging area and the real oldies were just beautiful as were the old Fire Trucks. As for all the other cars, well they were beautiful also, but I could not help feeling that they were not antique cars. The reason - I drove some of those models and rode in others. My, how time does fly and it was so hard to think of them - all shiny and in fresh out of the showroom perfect - as vintage, classic, antique. If I keep my car much longer I think I will be able to drive it in the parade. The most unusual was the Gull Wing car and to think that the man responsible for that car passed away just a short time ago.

Just before the holiday, Edith Trestik and Edith Gerber took time out to enjoy a peaceful lunch together. They both work very hard for the Woman's Auxiliary of the Community Church ( Edith Gerber is a past President of that group) and I'm sure they both deserved the rest.

Arlene Palmer and her husband were up from Baltimore for a visit with the children and grandchildren - they have four of them - and it was good to see them again. They were long tim residents of Garden City and Arlene could usually be seen playing tennis at the G.C. Casino when she was not busy teaching a class in the Studio Dept. of the Community Club.

Barbara Flanagan had a busy Easter week-end as she spent Saturday in New York City visiting family there and then on Sunday, she and her daughter spent time in Manhasset with family and then out East to have dinner. What a whirlwind week-end it was for them.

Sue Hall's Leprechaun moved off her front door just in time for the Easter Bunny and all the Shamrock's across town did the same thing. From the looks of the clusters of cars around town, most folks spent the day hosting family parties. That is really the best way to celebrate just about anything.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Howard Otte , who will celebrate his very special day on the 11th. And - special it is as Howard will be 96 on that day and that is really something to be proud of. He is still very active in the Retired Men's Club and may he have a number of more years in which to enjoy it in health and happiness.

Joan Stafford has been busy working on the Book and Author Luncheon which will be held on Friday, April 29 at Noon at the George Washington Manor in Roslyn for the Educational Foundation of the G.C. Branch of A.A.U.W. Joan is always doing something and doing it well so call her at 873-1732 for more details. She has three authors lined up and it does sound great.

One week down already for the month of April, but the Daffodils are starting to flower, trees are budding, and soon we will be in a flowering wonderland. Just can't wait. See you next week.
