Keep An Eye On The Hub

We were glad to hear that the public meeting on the Nassau County Hub proposal was well attended by Garden City officials and residents. The proposal, if it were to go forward in its entirety, would forever change the face of Garden City.

The proposal includes running "light rail" service through existing "rights-of-way" in order to link the Long Island Railroad stations with a variety of other sites such as Roosevelt Field, Nassau Community College and Hofstra.

While the traffic is pretty bad on the main arteries in Nassau County, we hardly think that people would be willing to abandon the comfort of their cars for the "joys" of public transportation.

Whether it is right or wrong, drivers prefer to sit in the relatively spacious comfort of their cars than to be at the mercy of sometimes unreliable service, shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other people.

Light rail systems work well in urban environments, such as Boston and other cities, but we have never heard of them tested in true suburban venues. In Boston, at least, the light rail lines run down the center of major roadways, not directly adjacent to homes.

As was said at the meeting, it is of key importance that the Village carefully examine any Environmental Impact Statements which are created in regard to the Hub. The devil may be in the details.
