New Child Restraint Law

The Garden City Police Department announces that as of March 27, 2005, a new Child Restraint Law went into effect in New York State. Garden City Police Commissioner Ernest J. Cipullo states that the new law now requires that all children under the age of seven be properly restrained in an appropriate child restraint device. Under the old law, children under the age of four were required to be restrained in a child seat. The new law also states that children under the age of four must be restrained in a federally approved safety seat, but children under the age of four that weigh more than 40 pounds may be restrained in a federally approved booster seat with a lap/shoulder belt. The new law also states that children age four and older but under age seven must be properly secured in a federally approved child restraint system that is manufactured to conform to the child's weight and height. Commissioner Cipullo states "The goal of this law is to provide more protection for children under the age of seven. Research has shown that children between the age of four and seven who are placed in appropriate booster seats are 59% less likely to be injured in a car crash than children who are restrained only with a seatbelt." Commissioner Cipullo would also like to advise that violations of New York's new Child Restraint Law may result in a fine of $105.00 and up to three points on their license.
