Justices of Courtroom C On February 8 th and 9 th the entire fifth-grade class at Stewart School participated in mock Supreme Court trials at the Federal Courthouse in Islip. Each year the youngsters take part in “The Constitution Works,” a civics program aimed at familiarizing students with the workings of our federal government and involving them in the process of interpreting the United States Constitution.

Each student was assigned a role as either a lawyer or Supreme Court Justice. The attorneys argued a case that pitted the first Amendment right of free speech vs. the government’s duty to protect its citizens. The justices heard arguments and wrote opinions.

Justice of Courtroom DJustice of Courtroom D By fostering personal involvement in national and current events, this program leaves the students with lasting tools for understanding the relevance of the Constitution to their own lives. This was an exciting experience that the youngsters will always remember! The fifth graders would like to thank Mrs. Hepworth for inviting them to use the new federal courthouse building in Islip as the venue for this program.
