Talk On Foreign Plants

2005-03-25 / Community

Have you ever admired the waving plumes of Fragmities on the roadside in swampy areas, or the purple blooms of the Lossestrife plants? Well, they are not native to this state or country and they are forcing out our native plants. The Garden Dept. of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead will address this topic on Wednesday, March 30 th at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Casino. The speaker will be Dr. Tammy Yeh, of the Cornell Cooperative Extension who is very knowledgeable in the area of Invasive Plants and especially those on Long Island. She will tell you of the impact these plants have on our birds, our waterfowl, our fish, as well as on our native plants. Some of them may even be in your gardens as they have been sold as exotic plants.

Garden Dept. Chairlady, Muriel Urban will welcome members and guests at both the Tea Hour and the program. Dr. Yeh will be happy to answer your questions following her slide presentation. Do come and enjoy and be informed. Long Island is our environment.

The Community Club offers a wide variety of quality programs, trips and creative classes from October through May. For information about membership in the Community Club, call the Club Office Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 516-746-0488.
