In Memoriam

Howard Gardner Sr.

Howard Gardner Sr., a 43-year resident of Garden City (Euston Rd. then Brompton Rd.), passed away after an illness of a year on February 1, 2005.

Mr. Gardner was born in Lilly, Pennsylvania on August 1, 1916. He moved to New York in the late 1930’s, then joined the U.S. Navy and the NYPD. He rose through the ranks in the NYPD, became Detective, and eventually Assistant Chief Inspector. While with the NYPD, he earned a reputation as a tough but fair inspector, who actively fought corruption, which had been commonplace in the late 1960’s - early 1970’s.

While in the NYPD, he graduated Brooklyn College and St. John’s Law School. He left the NYPD in 1975 and went into full-time law practice with the firm of Lubash & Gardner in Jamaica, New York. He left Lubash & Gardner and went into semi-retirement in the early 1990’s.

Mr. Gardner was an avid golfer, and a long-time golf member of the Garden City Country Club. He married Beatrice Syrewicz on August 17, 1940. Mrs. Gardner passed away in 2000, a few months after their 60 th anniversary. The late Mrs. Gardner was a graduate of Brooklyn College and received her Masters in Library Science from Queens College. She had worked as reference librarian at Mineola Library until the mid-1990’s.

Mr. Gardner is survived by two sons, Howard Jr. and Bob. Howard Jr., 56, of Garden City, graduated GC High, where he was a member of the varsity basketball and track teams. He graduated Bucknell College and St. John’s Law School. He worked as an attorney, including time at the New York Corporation Council.

Bob, 50, of Plainview, also graduated GC High, where he was a member of the Honor Society and the varsity baseball and bowling teams. He graduated the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Graduate School of Business. He worked as a financial manager for The New York Times Company, then started his own firm, North Shore Software.

The late Mr. Gardner is also survived by one granddaughter, Jennifer and one sister, Anne Gallagher.

The late Mr. Gardner was cremated; services were handled by Fairchild and Sons of Garden City.

In Memoriam

Walter A. Trenkle, M.D.

Walter A. Trenkle, M.D. died on February 15th. He was 80 years old.

Dr. Trenkle was born on December 28, 1925. Dr. Trenkle enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 23, 1943, and was honorably discharged on April 10, 1946 as Pharmacist's Mate, First Class. He was also honorably discharged as a reservist (ensign) on April 23, 1953. He was a World War II veteran.

Dr. Trenkle graduated from Hofstra University in 1949 and received his medical training at New York University, where he graduated in 1953. He was president of Hofstra University Alumni Association from 1966-1967, and was the recipient of Hofstra's George M. Estabrook Award for Alumni Achievement in 1969.

Dr. Trenkle was an orthopedic surgeon who had a practice in Mineola. He was on staff at Winthrop University Hospital for more than 40 years, and was chief of orthopedics for 14 years until 1987. Dr. Trenkle was recipient of Winthrop University Hospital's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. He was president of the Nassau County Academy of Medicine from 1979-1980 and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He served on the staff of Northport VA Medical Center in the 1990s.

Dr. Trenkle is survived by his wife Anne (Van Bourgondien), of Garden City; nine children, Walter (and Camille) of Lynbrook; James of Garden City; William (and Crystal) of San Diego, CA; Nancy Harrington (and Lawrence) of Ireland; Barbara Bento (and Fernando) of West Hempstead; Marianne Kiernan (and Matthew) of Northport; Robert (and Christine) of Bellmore; Kathryn (and Robert Carlson) of Driggs, ID; and Susan of Levittown. He is survived by 14 grandchildren, Keith Fancher; Tyler and Justin Trenkle; Caitlin, Conor and Luke Harrington; Michael, Casey and Scott Bento; Morgan and Christopher Kiernan; Allie and Cara Trenkle; and Sofia Carlson. Dr. Trenkle is also survived by two brothers, Robert (and Ann) of Plainview and Arthur (and Susan) of Idaho.

A Funeral Mass was said on February 19th at St. Joseph Church. Interment followed at Holy Rood Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Fairchild Sons.
