The Colonel Aaron Ogden Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, is pleased to have provided the current exhibit in the display cases in the Garden City Public Library.

The Daughters of the American Revolution observes February as American History Month. This year’s exhibit focuses attention on the 200th Anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of Discovery.

During the Presidency of Thomas Jefferson, the Louisiana Purchase was negotiated with Napoleon. This doubled the size of the United States. It was then decided that an expedition of discovery was required to explore the nation’s new holding. The explorers, under the command of Lewis and Clark, embarked on a perilous journey to chart this previously unknown territory. Despite hardship and danger along the way, with their leadership and the assistance of a young Native American woman guide named Sacagawea, they succeeded in their task.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the Garden City Public Library during the month of February to view the exhibit. In addition, the display case in the rear of the library holds essays of students from the Stewart School and St. Joseph’s School who participated in this year’s NSDAR American History Essay Contest, also on the topic of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The display case exhibits are courtesy of the NSDAR and planned under the direction of the chapter’s American History Chairman, Mrs. Margaret Musil.
