Boys’ Swim Team Performs Well In Hewlett & Syosset

On Tuesday, January 11th, the Garden City Boys’ Varsity Swim Team swam against Hewlett High School and came away with a victory. The boys also almost pulled an upset victory against the top seeded Syosset High School on Tuesday, January 18th. In this meet, Garden City lost by only six points.

In the Hewlett meet, Tom Barden got first place in the 200 yard freestyle and Sean Hosford came in second place.

In the 200 yard Individual Medley, Trevor Stanco won the race and Jonathan Derlath finished in second place, giving Garden City two consecutive 1-2 finishes.

Divers James Sheridan and Valentino Wong In the 50 yard freestyle, Brian Finnerty came in first place and Zack Dorkings came in fourth place.

In the 100 yard butterfly, Chris Finnegan won and Peter Ruhry came in third place.

The 100 yard freestyle was a crucial event for Garden City. In this race, Garden City went “1-2” with Brian Finnerty in first place and Trevor Stanco in second place.

In the 500 yard freestyle, Garden City took second and third place with Tom Borsari in second and Tim Logan in third place.

In the 100 yard backstroke, James Crafa finished in third place and James Sheridan came in fourth place.

The final event of the meet was the 100 yard breaststroke. In this race, Zack Dorkings came in second and Mike Abatemarco came in fourth.

These races concluded with a Garden City victory of 61-41. After the meet, Coach Anne Sullivan told her swimmers that they had to be ready to repeat this performance in the Division Championship meet on February 4th.

In the Syosset meet, Sean Lane and Jonathan Derlath finished in second and third place respectively in the 200 yard freestyle.

The next event, the 200 yard Individual Medley was by far the most exciting race of the evening. In this race, Trevor Stanco finished in first place and Chris Finnegan tied for second with a Syosset swimmer.

In the 50 yard freestyle, Brian Finnerty finished in second place and Zack Dorkings came in fourth place.

In diving, Valentino Wong and James Sheridan took first and second place and Chris Finnegan got third place.

The 100 yard butterfly was also an exciting race. In this event, Trevor Stanco finished in second place, Tom Barden got third place and Peter Ruhry finished in fourth place.

The next event was the 500 yard freestyle. In this race, Garden City swept the field with Tom Barden in first place, Sean Lane in second place and Jonathan Derlath in third place.

In the 100 yard backstroke, Sean Hosford got second place, Colin Quinn finished in fourth place and John Lofrese got fifth place.

The final event of the evening was the 100 yard breaststroke. In this race, Valentino Wong finished in fourth place, Zack Dorkings got fifth place and James Crafa finished in sixth place.

Despite the fact that the Garden City team did not win the meet, it did swim respectfully against the top ranked team in Nassau County. Coach Anne Sullivan feels confident that if Garden City swimmers swam like they did in this meet, they might be able to beat Syosset in the Division Championship meet in February.
