GC Upsets Farmingdale
On Tuesday, January 4, 2005, the Garden City High School boy's varsity swim team swam against the third ranked, Farmingdale High School. Garden City who was seeded fifth, surprised Farmingdale with a narrow victory. The final score of the meet was 99-87.
In the 200 yard freestyle, Sean Lane earned second place and Jonathan Derlath came in third place.
The next event was the 200 yard Individual Medley. In this race, Chris Finnegan got first place and Zack Dorkings came in fourth place.
In the 50 yard freestyle, Brian Finnerty finished in first place and Ed Keenan came in fifth place.
The next event was diving. In this event five divers competed against each other by doing six dives each. In this event, Valentino Wong got third place and James Sheridan got fourth place.
At this point in the meet, Garden City was behind, but after the 100 yard butterfly, Garden City got the lead and never looked back. In this event, Garden City got it's first "1-2" finish of the night. Trevor Stanco got first place and Tom Barden got second place. Peter Ruhry who got fourth place also added some much needed points to Garden City's advantage.
In the 100 yard freestyle, Brian Finnerty got second place and Chris Finnegan got third place.
The 500 yard freestyle was also a critical race. In this event, Garden City swept by getting first second and third places. Jonathan Derlath finished in first place, Sean Lane got second, and Sean Hosford came in third place.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Sean Hosford came in second place and Colin Quinn finished in third place.
In the final individual event of the evening, Garden City sealed itself a victory in the 100 yard breaststroke. Trevor Stanco came in first place and Tom Barden came in second place.
This meet was such a big accomplishment for the team, because Garden City had upset a team who had just as much talent and depth that they had. Their next meet will be on January 18th against the top seeded Syosset team.
