Contest SuperBowl Sunday, Feb. 6

SuperBowl Sunday, Feb. 6 from 2 to 5 P.M. will mark the opening "Council" round of the 2005 Knights of Columbus International Free-Throw Contest, Msgr. John's Knights Free-Throw Coordinator Jay Lynch and Grand Knight Jim Cioffi recently announced.

Contestants will vie for "Super" Trophies and a chance to move on in the tourney to the District Championship.

Following a major success for the event held on SuperBowl Sunday last year, the two leaders expect an even greater turnoout of participants and fans at McCloskey Auditorium with entrance next to St. Anne's Church at Dartmouth Street and New Hyde Park Road in Garden City.

All boys and girls of St. Anne's parish between the ages of 10 and 14 from St. Anne's School or public and private schools are eligible to compete in one of five age divisions 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. Entrants face youngsters of the same age and gender.

Age eligibilty is determined by the age of the contestant as of January 1, 2005. Participants are required to show proof of age at registration just prior to the contest.

No special expertise or team membership is required to compete. All are welcome. A total of 43 youngsters participated in the 2004 Council competition.

Adding a crowd-pleasing touch of "Super Fun" to the SuperBowl Sunday show this year will be the introduction of highly popular basketball "Knockout Contests" scheduled for 3, 3:30 snd 4 P.M.

The Council champions will be honored and awarded their "Super" trophies at a special family night "Pizzas and Trophies" reception to be hosted by the Council in March.

Among the winners in the 2004 Council contest were: GIRLS: Nicole Fuchs, Mary Kate Redmond and Catherine Ann Dickinsion. BOYS: Joseph Nuss, Leo Driscoll, Michael Ibarra and Frank Anthony Cordio. In 2003, then 11-year old Leo Driscoll advanced to a spot in the New York State finals at West Point, the highest achievement for a Msgr. John's Council entry.

More than 175,000 youngsters take part in the K of C International Free-Throw Championship in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the Phillipines.
