Come and see harry potter

Our family movie for January will be “Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban,” which is rated PG. The Recreation Department will show this film on Sunday, January 23 at 1 p.m. in Cluett Hall. Admission is free. Snacks can be purchased at a nominal charge.

Senior trip to the philadelphia flower show

The Garden City Recreation Department is excited to announce the first in a series of special trips for our senior population. Our first trip will be to the Philadelphia Flower Show on Wednesday, March 9. The theme of this year’s flower show is “America the Beautiful.” Enjoy the beautiful displays of great gardens and landscapes, as well as thousands of beautiful plants and floral designs.

This trip is open to any senior aged 60 or older who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The price of the trip will be $60. Space is very limited, so if you are interested, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall to reserve your spot. Payment must accompany registration. Checks must be made payable to “Prime Time Travel.” For further information, please call 465-4075.

MAGIC THE DOG

On January 30 at 1 p.m., magician Bill White returns with a new sidekick, Magic the Dog, and a brand new act that will surprise you. “Magic” and Bill, who have performed together both on the “Animal Planet” and “The View”, will visit Cluett Hall to show off the dog’s amazing magical abilities and funny antics.

Admission will be $2.00 for the show and reservations are necessary. Please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075 by Thursday, January 28 to reserve seating.

Anna epstein kravis

The Recreation Department will present a family concert by singer/songwriter Anna Epstein Kravis on Sunday, February 6 at 1 p.m. Anna with over 25 years of musical experience, will brighten up our winter day with songs of winter fun! This show will take place in Cluett Hall. The concert is free, but reservations are necessary. Please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075 for further information or to make a reservation.

Teen Movie Night

The Recreation Department is running a Friday Teen Movie Night for children in grades 6-9. Our first movie will be shown in Cluett Hall on Friday, January 28 at 7:15 p.m. The movie will be “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” rated PG. This action movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, and Jude Law uses a New York back drop to set a local reporter against a mad scientist who wants to take over the world.

The cost of entrance will be $2.00 and refreshments will be offered at a nominal charge. Supervision is provided by the Recreation staff. For further information, call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

New senior citizen recreation group forming

The Garden City recreation department will be sponsoring a new “Senior” group that will mon Monday mornings at the Garden City Recreation Center on Golf Club Lane. The group is designed to give senior residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City a place to meet with old and new friends and discuss topics of interest. Possible events may include book discussions, trips, and speakers. Anyone aged 60 or above is eligible to join. The first meting of this group will take place on Monday, January 24th at 9:30 a.m. For further information, please contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

open gym for H.S. students

St. Paul’s Field House will be open on Tuesdays from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm for high school students to enjoy playing basketball, volleyball and other gym activities. Students will be supervised but no organized activities will take place. This time is set up for students to enjoy activities with their friends. No organized practices are allowed. family fun time

On Sunday afternoons beginning this Sunday, St. Paul’s field House will have designated “Open Gym Time” for Village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym will be available for use from noon to 3:30 pm each Sunday until March.

This time is designated for our residents to use the Field House on a family and individual basis. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff in the Field House to monitor activities, this is not a drop off program. We ask that elementary school aged children and younger be accompanied by an adult.

Please note: Due to the amount of people using the Field House at this time, we can not allow Larosse sticks and baseball bats in the Field House during this time.

children’s swim lessons at adelphi

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting Children’s swimming lessons for village residents at the Adelphi University Swimming Pool in Woodruff Hall on Saturday mornings. Your child must be six years of age by the start of the program to participate. The classes will begin Saturday, February 5, 2005. Classes are taught by Red Cross Certified Instructors. The cost is $40.00.

The following levels will be offered:

Level 1 - beginner level - for children who have never taken lessons before

Level 2 - for children who have taken a lesson but have not reached level 3

Level 3 - for children who have not passed the old “Red Cross” level 4

Level 4 - for children who have not passed the old “Red Cross” level 5

Level 5 - for children who have not passed the old “Red Cross” level 6

Level 6P - Personal Water Safety - for children who have passed “Red Cross” level 6 or 7 or were currently in level 7 - stresses survival floating, treading water, swimming in clothes, etc.

Level 6F - Water Fitness - for children who have passed “Red Cross” level 6 or 7 or were currently taking level 7 - sessions will cover learning training techniques, how to use fins, kickboards, pace, clock, etc.

To register: by mail only, no walk in registrations will be accepted until February 1st. We can not be held responsible for delays in the mail. To register, pick up an application at the recreation office in Village Hall or at St. Paul’s. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, phone number, birth date, grade he/she will be entering in September and the camp you are registering. seventh and eighth grade rec night

The Garden City Recreation Department is sponsoring a “Rec. Night” for Seventh and Eighth Graders on Friday, January 21st at st. Paul’s Field House. The party will be chaperoned by the recreation staff and will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Admission is $5.00. A DJ will provide music and refreshments will be available for a nominal charge. The gym will be open for basketball, volleyball, dancing and other games.

Note-Once the children are in the field house, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come down to the field house to pick up your child.

tennis ladder program

Our Tennis Ladder Match Play Program is a Junior League Intraclub program for children ages 9-18. this program offers competitive match play formatted to fit each child’s playing level.

The league is organized by age and playing ability. Interested children must be able to serve from the baseline, sustain a slow paced rally, keep score unassisted and have an understanding of th rules of tennis.

This program will be minimally supervised during match play. The matches will be set up by our teaching staff. All matches will be held on Sundays between 2 and 4 p.m. beginning Sunday, january 30.

If you choose to participate in this league, the cost of the 10 week program will be $160. There will be no make ups for this league.

Adult Pastel class to begin

This ten week program will teach the beginners as well as the advanced student the art of painting portraits, landscapes, and still-life in pastels. Demonstrations will be available throughout the program as needed. Arleen Rueth Urban, the instructor for this class, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America.

Classes will be held at St. Paul’s Cluett Hall on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning January 28. The cost to register for this program will be $125. The program is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Students will be given a list of supplies needed to purchase for this program at the first class. SPRING ROLLER HOCKEY League 2005

The Garden City Recreation Dept. is pleased to announce its Spring Roller Hockey League for Boys and Girls Ages 6-8 and 9-12. League Play will begin on Friday March 4, 2005.

Evaluation Days will be held in order to make even teams. Your child needs to attend one of the following evaluation dates:

Friday, February 4, 11 or 18, 2005 at the following times -

Ages 6-85 to 6:30 p.m.

Ages 9-127 to 8:30 p.m.

All games will be played at the Garden City Community Park Roller Hockey Rinks. Ages 6-8 will have their games on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. Ages 9-12 will have their games on Friday’s at 7:30 p.m.

The price per player is $50. Applications are now available at Village Hall on Stewart Avenue and in the Tennis Center at Community Park. Please fill out an application and return it to Village Hall by our deadline of February 2, 2005.
