Marion Rombach Norman
Marion Rombach Norman, a long time resident of Garden City, N.Y. and Port St. Lucie, Florida, died of natural causes on January eleventh at St. Joseph’s Manor, a senior residence center in Trumbull, Ct. The family is most appreciative of the devoted loving care she received there. She was in her ninety second year.
Marion was a Parishioner of St. Joseph’s Parish in Garden City 1950-1973 and actively involved with her family and Church as a member of the Rosary Altar Society as well as participating in leadership roles with the Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Cherry Valley Country Club of Garden City and the Sandpiper Bay Club of Port St. Lucie, Florida. In her later years, she was an administrative assistant at the State Farm Insurance Co. in Port St. Lucie, Fl. She will be fondly remembered by all those who shared her love of dancing.
She is survived by four children, Joan Rombach Chisholm of Laurel, NY, Diane Rombach Ganser of Monroe, Ct., Lynn Rombach Pisani of Garden City, and Edward L. Rombach Jr. of Marblehead, Mass., as well as three sons-in-law, Joseph G. Chisholm, Raymond J. Ganser, and Michael J. Pisani and a daughter-in-law, Jeannie Pandolfo Rombach. In addition, she leaves 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Marion was married to the late Edward L. Rombach Sr. of Garden City and Port St. Lucie, Fl., forty seven years, and the late Alfred Norman of Stuart, Fl., four years.
A Funeral Mass recognizing her long and caring life will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, Garden City, on January fourteenth at 11 a.m. by a long time family friend, Msgr. Edward L. Tarrant. Visiting hours will precede the Funeral Mass at Fairchild’s Funeral Home, 1201 Franklin Avenue, Garden City, N.Y., from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
The family has requested any memorial contributions in her name be forwarded to St. Joseph’s Manor, 6448 Main St., Trumbull, Ct. 06611.
Tibor Andrew Vince, MD and Priscilla Marguerite Vince
Tibor Andrew Vince, MD, died suddenly on Christmas morning at home in Bethesda, Maryland. Priscilla Marguerite Vince, his wife of nearly 61 years, also died at home on January 3, 2005 after a long illness. The Vinces lived in Garden City NY for 35 years, from 1957 to 1992, and their sons, Paul, Steven and Clinton, all graduated from Garden City High School.
Dr. Vince was born March 13, 1910 in Budapest, Hungary, graduated from medical school at the Royal University of Turin, Italy, emigrated to the United States in 1939, and completed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology in New York. Dr. Vince served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in France and Germany during the Second World War, where he led his American medical team into the Dachau concentration camp when it was liberated by U.S. forces. He established his General Medical Practice in Queens Village, NY in 1946 and, after fifty years of medical practice, Dr. Vince retired in 1992 and he and Mrs. Vince moved to Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Vince was an avid numismatist and an active participant in the Queens Village Rotary Club, where he was a past president and past chair of the Rotary International exchange student program. Dr. Vince was known and loved by his patients for his personal care and attention, and by his friends and family for his outgoing charm, generosity, and quick wit.
Priscilla Vince was born July 17, 1920, trained as a registered nurse at St. Catherine’s Academy in New York, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. She met and married Dr. Tibor Vince in 1944 and gave birth to their first son, Paul, while Dr. Vince was overseas in Europe. Mrs. Vince was an extraordinary homemaker, creative decorator, and an accomplished gourmet chef and hostess. She and Dr. Vince were active in the Rotary International exchange student program, hosting students from all over the world, many of whom remained close friends throughout their lives. Mrs. Vince was involved in the Garden City Community Club and volunteered at the Winthrop Hospital Thrift Shop for many years. After moving to Bethesda, MD in 1992, Mrs. Vince participated in community affairs at Sumner Village until rheumatoid arthritis limited her mobility.
Dr. and Mrs. Vince are survived by their three sons and their families, including 4 grandchildren. The eldest and youngest sons are attorneys in the Washington, DC area and their middle son is a physician in Iowa. They were deeply loved and will be sorely missed. The family plans a memorial service in mid-March for loved ones and friends to celebrate these two wonderful people who touched so many lives. The family requests that donations in memory of Tibor and Priscilla Vince be made to the National Shrine of St. Jude, 205 West Monroe, Chicago, IL 60606 or to Sibley Memorial Hospital, 5255 Loughboro Road, Washington, DC 20016.
....... Charles Thompson
Charles Thompson, a long time resident of Garden City, passed away on December 9, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Kay, his children, Chas, Cathy Hicks, Chris, Matthew, Kerry Koslo, Maura the late Kevin, their spouses and thirteen grandchildren.
Charlie was born and brought up in Flushing. While attending Columbia University, he became a Jones Beach lifeguard following in his brothers’ footsteps. This was one of the highlights of his life along with his children and grandchildren continuing the tradition. After graduation, he was employed in the cosmetic industry until his retirement.
Charlie was involved in Boy Scout Troop 56 and worked with many to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also an active participant in the life of Saint Joseph’s Parish as an usher, Eucharistic Minister, visitor to parishioners in the hospital and served on many committees.
Charlie’s’ smile and outgoing personality will be missed by his family and many friends.
Frank Jarvis Page, 88,
Fighter Pilot And Golfer
Frank Jarvis Page, 88, a resident of Garden City for over 50 years, died peacefully in his sleep on December 30, 2004 in his home in Quail Ridge Country Club, Boynton Beach, Florida. Known as Jarvis, he was born in Maplewood NJ September 3, 1916, one of four sons of Leslie M. and Margaret Owen Page. Jarvis was a member of one of the first graduating classes of Columbia High School and attended the University of Virginia. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, becoming an instructor pilot in P-47 Thunderbolts, and specialized in aerial dog fighting. He served in the Pacific Theater in 1944. He was promoted personally by President Roosevelt, who asked him directly why he had washed out two well-connected West Point graduates. Jarvis replied, “I felt they were a danger to the other men, sir.” On February 10th, 1944, he married the former Virginia Ferrell Barfield of Hahira, Georgia. After the war, Jarvis and Virginia moved to Garden City, Long Island and Jarvis continued in his family hat business with his brothers, Homer and Chauncey. In 1954, he was caught in the LIRR commuter train wreck, promptly sold his business in the City, and bought a precision metal parts manufacturer in Long Island. An avid amateur golfer his whole life, Jarvis competed in the Walter J. Travis at Garden City Golf Club, where he was a former member, and various tournaments at Cherry Valley Golf Club, where he was a lifetime member. He was the founding President of the Midland Golf Club, an invitational golf tournament, which was named for the predecessor golf course to Cherry Valley, and remained as Honorary Chairman until his death. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Barfield Page of Boynton Beach, Florida and his two daughters, Ferrell Page McClean of Oyster Bay, NY and Hobe Sound, Fl., and Beatty Page Cramer of New York and Southhampton and two grandchildren, Ferrell Page McClean and William Chichester McClean IV and a brother, Chauncey Owen Page of New Canaan, Ct..
