Central Section’s Nominating Committee Re-nominates Dr. Miller
Mayor Barbara Miller
For the 4th time
Current Mayor
Barbara Miller for the
Position of Trustee
Barbara K. Miller, the current Mayor of the Village was the unanimous choice of the CPOA’s Nominating Committee for the position of Village Trustee from the central section as of April 2005. Dr. Barbara Miller has been a nurse for 40 years, held tenured positions in academia for over 30 years, and is a researcher, author/editor, consultant, and therapist for over 25 years. She has a private psychotherapy practice in Garden City and is Professor of the Nursing Education Master’s and Post-Master’s Certificate Programs at New York University’s Division of Nursing. Dr. Miller recently received the NYU Division of Nursing’s health policy and legislative award in recognition for her outstanding leadership.
Mayor Miller was the first women to be elected to the position of Mayor. As Trustee she held the positions of Commissioner of Finance, member and Chair of the Traffic Commission, chair of the Audit Committee, Chair of the Public Information Committee, and Chair of the Human Services and Ethics Committee. She also served as Fire Commissioner, and Chair of the Environmental Advisory Board (EAB).
Barbara Miller has a record of sustained leadership in the Village. Before her term as Mayor she served as an elected Trustee for three years and as the elected President of the CPOA for three years. Dr. Miller is a strong advocate of residents joining their Property Owners’ Associations (POA’s) and becoming active participants in the Village. She believes that resident volunteerism in the POA’s and on the various Commissions and Boards of the Village is the hallmark of this Village’s unique form of government and makes Garden City a very special place.
Dr. Miller is a 25 year resident of Garden City and resides on 10th Street with her husband Dr. Russell Miller an Orthopedic Surgeon. They have two grown children, Nadia and Randy, and a grandchild Amber Miller, age 17, who is a senior at Garden City’s High School.
When asked for a statement Dr. Miller said “The true intent of the Community Agreement party was for long service by Board of Trustee members which would allow the Board to develop in-depth knowledge on the working of the Village and lend stability to the Board. In the recent past this has not been the situation due to many of the Trustees resigning after a term or two. I will not be the first person to complete the term of Mayor and then be elected to the position of Trustee. I was encouraged by several current Trustees as well as CPOA leadership to seek the position of Trustee in order to maintain stability on the Board during a time when the Village faces multiple issues that will have the ability to change the face and residential character of Garden City.” She further stated that “she is committed to maintaining the residential integrity of the Village and upholding the Community Agreement form of government that has served this Village so well.”
The following members of the CPOA Nominating Committee brought forth the unanimous vote for Barbara K. Miller as Village Trustee from the central section: Tom Simpson, Chairperson; Kathleen Donnelly-O’Brien, Vice Chairperson; John Medori, Kathleen Galgano and Kathleen Horton.
