Thomas Motamed Named Adelphi Trustee
Thomas F. Motamed '71, vice chairman and chief operating officer of The Chubb Corporation, has been named to the Board of Trustees of Adelphi University. Mr. Motamed brings proven management and strategic planning skills to the University's Board, becoming the 14th alumnus to serve on the 27-member board.
As vice chairman and chief operating officer of Chubb, Mr. Motamed is responsible for worldwide underwriting, field operations, strategic marketing, planning and budgeting, and underwriting services. In his 27-year tenure with Chubb, he has developed and implemented a strategic business unit structure for the company and re-organized its field operations to respond more effectively and efficiently to local markets. A strong supporter of research and development, he also created an internal strategic development group focused on enhancing competitive advantage.
Hired by Chubb in 1977 as a claims trainee, Mr. Motamed has risen steadily through the company due to his innovative leadership and success at expanding profits. He was appointed to his current position in 2002 after his strategy to re-structure and re-focus the company's operations enabled Chubb to emerge from the depths of a soft market that devastated many of its competitors.
"I am honored to serve my alma mater as a Trustee and look forward to contributing to its continued growth and success," said Mr. Motamed.
"Tom's record at Chubb speaks for itself," said Steven N. Fischer, Chairman of the Adelphi University Board of Trustees. "He adds invaluable insight and expertise to the Board as an alumnus and outstanding corporate executive."
An industry expert, Mr. Motamed speaks frequently on property and casualty insurance issues. He is a director and treasurer of Assurex Development Corporation, as well as an alternate on the boards of the American Insurance Association and the Insurance Information Institute.
Mr. Motamed holds a J.D. from Widener University School of Law and a bachelor's degree in biology from Adelphi University where he was captain and most valuable player of the varsity lacrosse team.
