Winthrop-University Hospital recently received a $40,000 donation from The Pat Lyons Foundation after the organization held another successful Lt. Patrick Lyons Golf Classic. The second donation to Winthrop in two years, this gift was earmarked for the Hospital’s Cancer Center for KIDS, helping children living with and fighting childhood cancer. To date the organization has donated $70,000 to Winthrop.
“The Pat Lyons Foundation does amazing work, and Irene Lyons is a terrific individual—it’s clear she truly cares for children,” said Maria Kavan, Development Specialist for Winthrop’s Cancer Center for KIDS. The donation will help provide additional support for the psychosocial programs at the Hospital.
The Pat Lyons Foundation is dedicated to honoring the memory and spirit of Patrick John Lyons, a New York City firefighter, who heroically gave his life on September 11, 2001 to help others. The Foundation was established by Patrick’s wife, Irene, their son, Patrick Mate Lyons, his family and friends to help improve the lives of children.
In addition to its support for Winthrop’s Cancer Center for KIDS, the Foundation provides financial assistance to several charities and organizations that help children.
The raffle funds were raised during the Foundation’s second annual golf outing in September. “It’s a grand party,” explained Mrs. Lyons. “The demand to attend is incredible. It’s a great way to remember my husband, and have a big party in his memory.”
