GCAA Maroon 5th Grade Girls Stay Unbeaten

2005-01-07 / Sports

The Garden City Maroon 5th grade girls basketball team, coached by John Kiffel, finished the first half of its Super League season at Island Garden with a 6-0 record, following its most recent victories -- 37-7 over the HHH Fury and 31-20 over Notre Dame.

In rolling to a 6-0 record, the GCAA Maroon girls have used their considerable depth to wear down opponents. That was the case against a feisty Notre Dame team that led, 4-3, at the end of one quarter. But the Garden City girls seized control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring Notre Dame, 15-4, to take a 10-point halftime lead. Garden City was never threatened in the second half en route to the victory.

As has been the case all year, Garden City featured a balanced scoring attack. In three of the six games, every player has scored at least 1 point. And when they are not scoring, they are helping out on the defensive end or with their team-oriented play on the offensive end.

“The girls continue to play well. It’s nice to see all 12 girls make a contribution each game,” coach Kiffel said. “Hopefully the second half of the season will be as successful as the first half.”

In the Notre Dame win, Kimberly Ryan and Caitlin McGuinness led the way with 6 points each. Lauren Nuss, Katie Trimmer and Liz Stutzmann contributed 4 points apiece, Jenna Fuchs had 3 points and Christina Capetola and Christina Mangels added 2 points each. Marisa Cameron, Catherine Dickinson and Julia Kiffel supplied strong play on both sides of the court.

On Dec. 20, Garden City defeated the HHH Fury, 37-7. All nine girls who dressed for the game scored. Lauren Nuss had 9 points to pace the attack. Christina Mangels, Kimberly Ryan and Jenna Fuchs scored 6 points each, and Marisa Cameron, Julia Kiffel, Caitlin McGuinness, Katie Trimmer and Liz Stutzmann added 2 points apiece.
