At the same time the Garden City Library was established on May 4, 1952 in a small white clapboard house on the East end of Seventh Street, The Friends of the Garden City Library was also formed. For over 50 years, The Friends have provided funds to the library to sponsor movies, lectures, workshops for children of all ages and book discussion groups. Some of The Friends meet each week to sort and price the books donated to the library. Calling themselves The Bookworms, these volunteers prepare the books to be sold annually at the May Book Fair and daily in the display shelves near the main circulation desk.

Recently, The Friends honored three deceased members who so faithfully gave their time for many years. They are Frances Hinsch, (the first library director), Theodora Lourekas and Dorothy Hatch. A plaque with their names was presented to Director Alan G. Roeckel by Walter Engles, President of The Friends. It will be displayed in the lower level lobby opposite the art gallery wall.
