News From The Children

At 11 AM on Saturday January 8th the Children's Department will be showing a Family Film The Young Black Stallion. This film runs for 55 minutes and is based on the Walter Farley classic book by the same title. Refreshments will be served. Neither tickets nor registration are necessary. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 8.

New! The Children's Department will be holding a Winter Reading Club - Join the IditaREAD! Registration and the club will begin on January 17th and conclude February 5th. This activity and all the storytimes, book discussions, special programs schedules for both preschool and school-age children are listed on the new flyers available in the Children's Room. Registration for the Winter/Spring Season is scheduled to begin on January 3, 2005. As was true for last season, you may register online at www.nassaulibrary.org/gardenc/ or in person in the Children's Room for the Winter/Spring season. The storytimes will begin on January18th.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day the Children's Department will be having a Family Film show of African Folktales. The program will last 60 minutes. Refreshments will be served. An adult must accompany any child under 8 years of age.

Handwriting Workshop

The Young Adult Department of the Garden City Public Library is conducting two “Vintage Handwriting Workshops” for Garden City cardholders in grades 6-12. The first session is scheduled on Saturday, January 22 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. and the second session on Saturday, January 29 from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. Sign up for one session only.

Join Joanne Insinga to learn how to create elegant script used during the mid-1800’s to early 1900’s. Friends and family will admire your beautiful handwriting on letters, cards and more. All materials will be supplied and participants will be given a fountain pen to take home.

Registration begins on Saturday, January 8 at 9:00 a.m. at the Reference Desk. This program is brought to you free of charge thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

To Meet

There will be an Organizational Meeting of the Board of the Library Trustees on the second Monday of January, January 10, 2005, at 7:30 p.m.

Garden City Library To Hold Blood Drive

The Garden City Public Library will be conducting a blood drive on THURSDAY, January 13, from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the lower level large meeting room. Medieval Entertainment

The Young Adult Department of the Garden City Public Library is conducting “A Merrye Medieval Entertainment” for Garden City library cardholders in grades 6-12 on Saturday, January 15 from 2-3 p.m.

Join Michael Goudket and Emily Bader for entertainment fit for a prince or princess, with music, stories, jokes and juggling of the Middle Ages. Two fully costumed performers will play period music on flute, harp, drum and other instruments as they tell the lighter side of medieval life.

Registration is going on now in the Young Adult Department. This program is brought to you free of charge thanks to the generosity of The Friends of the Garden City Public Library.

Free Slide/Lecture: “The Art of Chinese Tea”

A Free slide/lecture and demonstration “The Art of Chinese Tea” will be presented by tea expert Ellen Lii at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the Garden City Public Library. Chinese flute music will accompany a Chinese tea ceremony by professional musician Dale Reed. Participants are requested to bring their own tea cup . This program is sponsored by The Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Seating and parking is limited and on a first-come first-served basis . No tickets are required. Ellen Lii, owner of “Ten Ren Tea & Ginseng Company” in Manhattan’s Chinatown, will divulge the secrets of an ancient and beautiful art that is rarely seen by Westerners. The audience will view the growing, processing, special equipment and procedures that are needed to make a “perfect cup.” In the Orient, tea drinking is an art. A tea master must have a license to perform special tea ceremonies, a thorough knowledge of tea, and be a fine connoisseur of Oriental art and music. Ellen has given presentations at many prestigious venues including: Lincoln Center; the Asia Society; the NY, Queens & Staten Island Botanic Gardens; Twin Oaks Mansion in Washington, D.C. (by a Smithsonian Institute invitation); embassies, colleges, and business and civic organizations throughout the NY metropolitan area. The Lii business has received awards including: the Asian-American Business Award from the NYC Mayor’s office in 1992 and the NYC Tourism Industry Service Award in 1993.

Exhibit: Pastel Paintings By Adult Student Artists

An art exhibition of Pastel Paintings by Adult Student Artists will be displayed in the Garden City Public Library’s gallery through January 8-28, 2005. View pastel portraits, landscapes and still-lifes created by local artists studying with award-winning instructor Arleen Rueth Urban of GC Adult Education and GC Recreation Dept.

The collection shows off talents of local residents who wanted to learn the unique style of Rueth. This award-winning GC artist enjoys painting the subject’s personality.

Student Exhibit From Saint Joseph School

A showcase of student work, programs, photos and artwork from Saint Joseph’s School will be on view at the GC Public Library through January 30, 2005 in honor of Catholic School Week.
