Varsity Ice Hockey Falls To Oceanside

On November 8 th, the Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey team faced-off against Oceanside High School. For the fourth game in a row, GC fell behind early when Oceanside scored three minutes into the game as a GC penalty expired. Three minutes later, Oceanside scored again to take a two goal. Towards the end of the first period, Max Bankin scored off a pass from Kevin Rice to cut the Oceanside lead to 2-1.

Oceanside increased their lead to three to one midway through the second period. Shortly after that goal, Garden City was called for a double major penalty that resulted in the Wings being a man-down for six minutes. During this time, Garden City received another penalty and faced a 5 on 3 situation. The penalty killing units did an outstanding job for the Wings and kept Oceanside from increasing their lead over Garden City. Credit to Brian Collins, Kevin Seiferth, Kevin Rice, David Brown, Conor Reeves, Ryan Norell, Aaron Kim, Brian Kiernan, Kevin Betts and Nick Greco for their hard work while shorthanded.

With a little more than nine minutes remaining in the third period, Garden City returned to full strength and started to put pressure on the Oceanside goaltender. Great work by forwards Kyle Seiferth, Kevin Beets, Nick Greco, Conor Reeves, and Aaron Kim resulted in several opportunities for Garden City, but Oceanside was able to maintain their two-goal lead. With less than four minutes remaining in the game and Garden City on their second powerplay of the evening, Kevin Sieferth ripped a shot past the Oceanside goalie to cut the lead down to one. Ryan Norell assisted on the Seiferth goal. During the last three minutes of the game, Garden City continued to press for the tying goal but Oceanside hung on for a 3-2 victory.

Garden City goaltender Tom Hickcox had another good game for Garden City and finished the evening with 20+ saves. Congratulations to captain Kevin Seiferth for being named the runner-up varsity player of the month for October. Garden City’s overall record now stands at 4-2-1. The team is currently in fourth place in their division.
