Varsity Boy's Swim Team Off To Great Start
The GCHS boy's varsity swim team started their 2004-05 season with a victory over Jericho last Tuesday, December 7, 2004. The boys swam well in their win over Jericho with a final score of 109-74. The team, with 27 swimmers welcomed twelve new members this year; Mike Abatemarco (7), Marc Bog-hosian (10), Jonathan Derlath (7), Zack Dorkings (9), Tom Fiala (9), Ed Keenan (10), Brendan Lee (10), Thomas Leone (10), Tim Liddy (9), Tim Mc. Tiernan (9), James Sheridan (7), and Ryan Theobalt (7). These new swimmers were key to the Garden City victory. Last year's captains, Rob Seery and Mike Finnerty are now swimming at The University of Notre Dame and Colby College respectively. The team wishes them well with their college seasosn.
Several other swimmers such as Tom Barden (12), Peter Ruhry (12), Trevor Stanco, (12) Brian Finnerty (11), Valentino Wong (11), John Lofrese (11) Sean Hosford (10) Tom Bosari (10), Connor Cocopardo (10), Garret Imbrenda (8), Tim Logan (9), Chris Finnegan (9), James Crafa (9), and Colin Quinn (9) swam very well in their events. Coach Anne Sullivan feels pretty confident about the depth her team brings, but a long and unpredictable season lies ahead of them. The captains this year, Tom Barden, Peter Ruhry, and Trevor Stanco are optimistic on how the season started off. They are also pleased with the number of members on this year's team. 2003-04 All County member, Sean Lane is currently out with an injury, but is expected to return by mid January to help with the team's tough schedule. The team's next meet will be against Farmingdale on January 4, 2005.
GC Spring/ Summer Travel Baseball Tryouts
Tryouts for the Garden City FIRE u-11 and Garden City Vipers u-11 spring/summer travel baseball teams will be held the first week of January. Eligible players must live or attend school in Garden City and must be age 11 or younger before August 1, 2005. Tryouts for both teams will be held on the same night during the week of January 3rd.
Boys that played this past fall season for either the FIRE or the VIPERS do NOT need to try out for their existing team (returning Viper players may opt to tryout for the FIRE and FIRE players may also tryout for the Vipers). New players will be trying out for open roster spots on these existing teams.
Travel play consists of mostly Sunday doubleheaders or Friday night doubleheaders depending upon the team and league (for more details call one of the coaches listed below). Play should not interfere with regular GCAA baseball and travel players making these teams are also expected to enroll in GCAA baseball.
