Pack 7 had a busy November, with lots of fun and charitable activities. On Veteran’s Day, over 40 Scouts attended the memorial ceremony and rededication of the Rainbow Division Monument. The Scouts learned an interesting past of Garden City’s history. In 1917, thousands of soldiers were housed, trained and mobilized at Camp Mills to fight in World War I, as part of the Rainbow Division. The leaders would like to thank the American Legion for inviting the Scouts and for recognizing them at the ceremony.

At November pack night, Herb Blauert and Joe Kratt of the William Bradford Turner American Legion Post demonstrated to the Scouts the proper way to fold the American Flag and the meaning of each fold. They were assisted by Boy Scouts from Troop 56. The Cub Scouts then folded their own mini “pocket flags,” which are being sent to the current Rainbow Division overseas along with a thank you note, picture and deck of cards.

At the November pack night, Pack 7 also collected food for donations to Mercy First and the families of servicemen and women. Commander Gregory Gjurich of the Navy was personally on hand to thank the boys. The amount of food collected was truly impressive. Additionally, used eyeglasses were collected and forwarded to the Lion’s Club.

November also saw the conclusion of the annual popcorn sale fundraiser. Scouts Billy Tranfaglia, Thomas Zwicke and James Amato each sold over $1,000 worth of popcorn! The money that the Pack earns is used throughout the year to fund activities. In November a check in the amount of $250 was presented to Jill Palmeri of The Andy Foundation, a Garden City-based charitable organization whose slogan is “By Kids, For Kids.”

In December Pack 7 looks forward to skating with Santa, among other activities.

January will include an overnight “camping trip” at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey, and the annual Pinewood Derby Race. This year’s race will feature a brand-new racetrack and electronic timer purchased with earnings from last year’s popcorn sale and a generous gift from The Garden City Kiwanis Club.
