Plea In Case Of Accident
Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon announced today that Omar Syed Afzal, 18, of Mineola, plead guilty to two counts of Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a Class D Felony and one count of Driving While Impaired By Drugs, a Class A Misdemeanor.
Afzal was arrested on July 29th for causing the deaths of Christina Caroleo and Alison Reilly on Dec. 23, 2003 in a Garden City automobile accident.
According to Dillon, "On December 23, 2003 Afzal was under the influence of drugs while operating a 1998 Ford Explorer northbound on Nassau Boulevard when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree in the vicinity of Merillon Avenue before rolling over and ejecting two rear passengers. One of the passengers, Alison Reilly, 15, of Garden City, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other, Christina Caroleo, a 16 year-old female, was taken to Winthrop Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on January 26, 2004."
Afzal faces up to seven years in prison and will be sentenced on February 23, 2005 by Nassau County Court Judge Jeffrey S. Brown.
