The Garden City Maroon 5th grade girls basketball team continues to play terrific team basketball, winning two lopsided contests this past week to improve to 4-0 in Super League play at Island Garden.

Coach John Kiffel’s team defeated OLV, 42-7, last Saturday and the Jericho Stars, 37-8, on Monday. In both contests, all 11 Garden City players scored. “Our team has started the season great,” coach Kiffel said. “They are winning because of teamwork and solid defense. It’s been fun watching them improve with each game.”

Regardless of which five are on the court, the GCAA Maroon players are getting the job done on both ends of the court. In Monday’s victory over previously undefeated Jericho, the Stars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Garden City reeled off the next 8 points. Jericho tied the game at 8-all as the buzzer sounded ending the first quarter.

Little did anyone know at the time that Jericho would not score another point in the game. GCAA Maroon outscored Jericho, 10-0, in the second quarter; 10-0, in the third quarter; and 8-0 in the fourth quarter for the final tally of 36-8.

No player on Garden City scored more than 6 points, another example of the great offensive distribution. Christina Mangels had the 6 points. Kimberly Ryan and Lauren Nuss had 5 points each. Maggie Kiley and Catherine Dickinson scored 4 points apiece, while Christina Capetola, Marisa Cameron, Julie Kiffel, Caitlin McGuinness, Katie Trimmer and Jenna Fuchs scored 2 points each.

In the 42-7 win over OLV, Catherine Dickinson had 12 points. Kimberly Ryan, Jenna Fuchs, Marisa Cameron, Christina Capetola and Julia Kiffel scored 4 points each, and Christina Mangels, Katie Trimmer, Caitlin McGuinness, Lauren Nuss and Maggie Kiley had 2 points each.

Even more important than the individual scoring, the girls are playing very unselfishly, looking for the open player, communicating on the court, and playing hard, tough defense.

Garden City plays its final game before the Christmas break on Monday against the HHH Fury. Game time is 6 p.m. at Island Garden.
