Holiday Movie
Our holiday movie for the season will be “Shrek 2”. We will show this feature in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall on Wednesday, December 30th at 1 p.m. Admission is free and snacks will be for sale at a nominal charge. The running time of this movie is 92 minutes. Supervision will be provided by the Recreation staff.
Holiday Gym program
The Recreation Dept. will hold recreation activities in St. Paul’s Field House for children in grades K through 12 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City during several of the holiday break days. We will run this program on:
Monday, December 27 through Thursday, December 30.
According to the following times:
Grades K and 1 - 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Grades 2 and 3 - 10:30 to noon
Grades 4, 5, and 6 - noon to 2 p.m.
Grades 7 to 12 - 2 to 5 p.m.
The Recreation Dept.’s staff will run organized games for Kindergarten through sixth grades. The staff will monitor grades 7 to 12 for open gym time. This scheduled time is open for this grade group to have “fun” with their friends in a supervised setting. For further information, please contact the Recreation Office at 465-4075.
2nd Session of adult tennis lessons beginning
We are now accepting interest sheets for the 2nd session of adult tennis lessons. This 10 week program is slated to begin the week of January 9. Assuming a full class (3-4 adults), the cost of the 10 week session is $190. A higher fee will be charged if there are less than three people in a class. For further information or to fill out an interest sheet, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.
Summer park employment
Applications are now being accepted for summer park and camp positions the Garden City Recreation Department. If you will be a high school senior or older this summer, have enjoyed our park programs as a child, and are looking to share that experience with other children, visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall for an application. An interview will also be necessary, which will be set up as the applications are returned.

Please Note: Tickets are available to residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. All purchases must be made in cash, no checks will be accepted. To reserve tickets for any event, call the Recreation Office at 465-4075 and they will be held up to one week. No more than six tickets may be purchased by any one family.
beginner guitar lessons offered for teens and adults
Beginner guitar lessons are being offered by the Recreation Department to teens and adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The lessons will be given on Wednesday evenings at the Garden City Middle School according to the following schedule: Beginning Wednesday, January 12th:
Teens in 6th through 12th grade -7:00 p.m.
Adults8:00 p.m.
The cost of this ten week program will be $50. All students will need to supply their own guitar. To register for this program, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.
Please Note: A fee of $15 for books and supplies is to be paid directly to the instructor on the first day of class.
Chess Club Begins
The Recreation Department’s Chess Club will begin again on Saturday, December 4th. The club will meet each Saturday afternoon in the Garden City Library from noon to 2 p.m. Under the direction of Paul Dooher, youngsters will have a chance to learn new strategies while playing games each week. Beginners will be taught basic moves and concepts. At the end of the season, we’ll hold a tournament, and award trophies for the top performers. There is no charge for this program, and no registration is necessary. Youngsters in grades 3 and up are welcome to join the Chess Club. Santa’s Mailbox and candy cane contest
‘Tis the season to send your letters to Santa, and the Recreation Department will help speed up the process! A special “Santa’s mailbox will be set up in the Village Hall Lobby beginning December 6. Children can drop their letters in this mailbox and Santa will send them a reply. All letters must be received in the mailbox no later than 4:00 p.m. on December 20 to insure a reply. All letters must contain a legible address, and no postage is necessary.
While dropping off their letters to Santa, children can take a chance at guessing the number of candy canes in the large jar next to the mailbox.Drop your guess into the mailbox, and the child with the guess closest to the actual number of candy canes will win the jar, canes and all! As with Santa’s mailbox, the candy cane contest will be available December 6 through the 20.
Elementary After school program
The Garden City Recreation Department is please to announce that once again this winter, a Gym program for Elementary School aged children will be conducted weekday afternoons after school. This program will be held in the St. Paul’s Field House.Both Stewart and Stratford children will attend the same sessions. Sneakers are required for this program. Our Winter Gym Program will provide the children an opportunity to participate in hockey, basketball, and other gym activities in a structured setting.
This program will begin on Monday, December 6 and will operate according to the following schedule:
Boys: Grades 3, 4, and 5 - Mondays 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Girls: Grades 3, 4, and 5 - Fridays 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Note: Parents are expected to be on time for pick up. Please come down to the Field House to pick up your children. For further information call 465-4075.
2nd Session Children’s tennis lessons
It is not too early to register for the 2nd session of children’s tennis lessons, which will begin on Monday, January 3. The Recreation Department offers a full compliment of lessons for children ages 5 through 18. In order to find out about the variety of lessons available and to get th best chance of a class that would fit your child’s schedule, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.
junior ladder match play 2004-2005
Our Match Play Program is a Junior League Intraclub Program for children ages 9-18. This program offers competitive match play formatted to fit each child’s playing level.
The league is organized by age and playing ability. Interested children must be able to serve from the baseline, sustain a slow paced rally, keep score unassisted and have an understanding of the rules of tennis.
This program will be minimally supervised during match play. The matches will be set up by our teaching staff. All matches will be held either on Sunday between 2 and 3 or 3 and 4 p.m. or Sat. between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., depending on the players’ skill level.
If you choose to participate in this league, the cost of the 10 week program will be $160. There will be no make ups for this league.

INTERVIEW DATES FOR SUMMER POOL EMPLOYMENT
The Recreation Department is announcing that start of a series of interviews for summer jobs at the Garden City Pool. If you enjoy being outdoors and are willing to make a commitment to being a part of a team that works hard to provide quality facilities for our residents, we’d like to meet you!
If you are presently a high school junior or older and are looking for a great summer job stop in the Recreation Office in Village Hall, pick up an application, and sign up for an interview.
Reminder: even if you were employed by the pool last year, you are still required to reapply and be interviewed for the upcoming season.
Interviews will be conducted at Village Hall on the following dates:
Tuesday, December 28 from 10 am to 3 pm
Saturday, January 8 from 10 am to 3 pm
Saturday, January 15from 10 am to 3 pm
Saturday January 22from 10 am to 3 pm
Learn & Play
Roller Hockey
The Garden City Recreation Dept. is pleased to announce once again it will run a Learn & Play Hockey Clinic. The Program will be open for Boys and Girls Ages 6-8 and 9-12 on four Friday evenings in the Month of January. This program is designed to help gain hockey experience through fun pick-up games and clinics.
The times for these clinics will be:
Ages 6-85 to 6:30 p.m.
Ages 9-127 to 8:30 p.m.
The price per child is $25. All games will be played at Garden City Community Park Roller Hockey Rinks. For further information or to register for this program, visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.
SPRING ROLLER HOCKEY League 2005
The Garden City Recreation Dept. is pleased to announce its Spring Roller Hockey League for Boys and Girls Ages 6-8 and 9-12. League Play will begin on Friday March 4, 2005.
Evaluation Days will be held in order to make even teams. Your child needs to attend one of the following evaluation dates:
Friday, February 4, 11 or 18, 2005 at the following times -
Ages 6-85 to 6:30 p.m.
Ages 9-127 to 8:30 p.m.
All games will be played at the Garden City Community Park Roller Hockey Rinks. Ages 6-8 will have their games on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. Ages 9-12 will have their games on Friday’s at 7:30 p.m.
The price per player is $50. Applications are now available at Village Hall on Stewart Avenue and in the Tennis Center at Community Park. Please fill out an application and return it to Village Hall by our deadline of February 2, 2005.
