Fighting Fire The Old-Fashioned Way

The month of October was fire prevention month. The Garden City Primary School at Locust had a special treat to honor and celebrate the fire fighting efforts of the past. Philip Huntington, husband of a Locust School kindergarten teacher, drove his 1923 Broadway Torpedo Fire Engine into the school’s back field. Mr. Huntington gave the children in his wife’s class an opportunity to examine and compare the fire safety equipment of long ago such as heat detectors, fire extinguishers and fire fighter hats. All the children at Locust had the opportunity to sit on the truck and crank the siren. Everyone loved to pull the rope on the big brass bell. This wonderful engine served as a great reminder of how fire fighting has developed. It provided a wonderful opportunity for hands-on learning and made the past and present come together.
