Gladiators Sweep November
Bingham w/ shot off post w/ Tavernese
The sweeps that took place in Garden City this November had nothing to do with the television ratings. This sweep was the one administered by the U12 Boys Gladiators led by our own TV man Coach Fusco with the assistance of Coach Lynch and Pallai.
The boys took to the road again with a Saturday afternoon matinee against the Hauppauge Wildcats. With a steady morning rain, the pitch was a bit sloppy as the Gladiators continued their march up the ladder in a highly contested division. The match started with a familiar look to it as the Gladiators applied pressure from all corners of the field. Once again, you have to have "Defense" and the Gladiators start with that in the back led by its keeper James Cauchi, who once again showed the importance of an aggressive keeper with his spirited play. He is joined in the back by the dynamic duo of the "Sean's" Callahan & Mahon and their wingmen Brandon Badgett-Nick Fusco-John Tarzian, a back line that takes no prisoners. The Gladiators up front had all sorts of chances as the forward combo's of Sean Bingham-Matt Confort-Costa Trikas-Mark Pallai-Vincent Tavernese had several turns on net. In a scramble in front 6 different players had a shot on goal only to be denied by the Hauppauge defense. The half ended 0-0.
Proctor & Lynch are all hustle
The 2nd half opened with the Gladiators middies gaining better control of the 50/50 play with center-mid Sean Proctor leading his outside wingers Joey "Nails" Barbarto-Jonny "22 Pts." Reynolds- Kyle "Becks" Lynch and Kevvy “Q.” Quinn on a 50/50 landslide of possession and that play led to a 1-0 lead as "Bings" was able to convert. Hauppauge continued to apply pressure as the tempo of the game changed and eventually tied it up at 1-1.The Gladiators rebounded as the front 6 pushed the ball into the Hauppauge zone with several runs at goal and Matt Confort deposited a rebound into the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage. At this stage of the game, play became rather chippy as both teams were starting to show some frustration over what appeared to be a lack of calls from the official. The Gladiators regained their poise and were able to finish out with a 2-1 win and remain undeated in November. The Gladiators are currently sitting in 2nd place with 19 points (6W-2L-1T) will have to wait till after Thanksgiving for the final standings to be posted with some teams still having to make-up rained out games.
Badgett w/ shot
The Gladiators followed on Sunday with a make-up game against Ellwood. The game was a very physical battle with a huge defensive effort by all players in front of Keeper James (“Never Grouchy”) Cauchi. The goals were scored by a superb move resulting in a body deflection shot by Costa Trikas and Sean Bingham, who continues to shock the opposing defenders with his speed and angle shots since his return to Long Island last year. Gladiators won 2-1
