On the evening of November 14, many Garden City residents attended the gala opening of ‘Fernando Botero: Works on Paper” at the Nassau County Museum of Art. This show marks the first time ever that this famous Latin American artist has displayed works from his own private collection. Art historians have frequently referred to Botero as the most important and famous living artist in the world today. Born in Columbia, South America, Botero spent many years in Florence, Italy where he studied the great Renaissance masters. He achieved international fame at an early age with his satirical paintings of oversized objects and figures. Botero’s smooth and rounded depiction of people often exhibit a comic disregard for correct proportions. His beautiful still lifes of fruits and flowers with their abundant color along with his humorous look at cafes, marketplaces and nudes have captivated audiences around the world.
A few years back, Botero’s monumental sculptures were displayed outdoors along Park Avenue from East 60th to East 66th Street and attracted large crowds of admirers. The prices for his artworks have soared recently and have reached new records at both Sotheby’s and Christies.
This art show is a historic event which will draw visitors not only from the New York area but from Europe and South America as well,” said Constance Schwartz, museum director.
Botero currently lives in New York City but also has homes in Paris and Florence, where he spends much of his time. The exhibition will be on view through February 13. The Nassau County of Art will be the only venue for this blockbuster show after which all the art works will be returned to the artist in his personal collection.
