Bernard G. Castle, M.D.

Bernard G. Castle, M.D., 74, died on October 22, 2004, at his daughter’s home in Hanover, NH, after a long battle with scleroderma.

He was born on September 26, 1930, in Lapeer, Michigan. He graduated from Lapeer High School in 1948. He entered the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1961. He did postgraduate studies at New York University, and interned at Bellevue Hospital and the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was an utterly devoted, cherished physician, and practiced medicine at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, NY until his retirement in 1999, when he returned to Lapeer, MI.

He loved the ocean, sailing, the Michigan Wolverines football team, visiting with family and friends, talking about politics, sharing anecdotes, and laughing. He is dearly missed.

He is survived by his children Amy (Alan, M.D.) Kono of Hanover, NH; Angela (Lt. Col. Matthew) Broaddus of Leavenworth, KS; Maj. Amanda Digre of St. Paul, MN; Joseph (Cathleen) Castle of Albertson, NY; and Alexandra Castle of Brevard, NC; a sister, Irene Blazo of Lapeer, MI; a sister-in-law, Jean Castle of Melbourne Beach, FL; nine grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Grace Castle, his brother Stewart Castle and his sister Betty LeDuc.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 20, at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer, MI, with the Rev. Todd Smith officiating.
