Building Literacy Skills
Students use letter cubes to look for similarities and differences among letters.
Mrs. Polant’s kindergarten class at Locust School has been very busy working toward the NYS Early Literacy Competencies. As Mrs. Polant teaches reading strategies to a small guided reading group, the remainder of her students are engaged in independent literacy-based activities. Students have the opportunity to practice the phonics and word work skills they have previously learned. The children work at building and writing their names and the names of classmates. Other students are reading and coloring an alphabet link chart that will be used as a resource for independent writing. A third group uses letter cubes to look for similarities and differences among letters of the alphabet. Although they are involved in different activities, the entire class shares in enjoying the wonderful world of literacy.
