To further enhance the social studies curriculum and to meet the New York standards of major eras, themes and development in the history of the United States, the kindergarten classes at Homestead School recently visited the Sands Willets House in Port Washington. This is a historical house-museum in which one-half was built circa 1735 in the colonial era and the other half around 1845. The house is complete with 18th and 19th century artifacts and furniture and provides hands-on programs for elementary children called a “Visit to Yesterday.” The program involved the children in stenciling, making corn bread and apple pie and playing colonial games. The children also visited the upstairs of the house and saw the actual bedrooms, complete with authentic colonial furniture. As a culminating activity, each child sampled the corn bread and apple pie that they prepared with the help of the curators and parent volunteers.
