The Waldorf Varsity soccer team rounded out an outstanding 13-1 season by winning the IPPSAL (Independent Private Parochial School Athletic League) Division II Championship game, defeating Martin Luther High School 3-1, at the Portledge School, on Monday, October 25, 2004. Waldorf started the game in a buoyant mood having beaten Martin Luther in two previous games this season. It was not until the 25th minute of play that a long pass from Peter Foster was fumbled by the goal keeper giving Jesse Kane the opportunity to slot the ball home to take the lead for Waldorf. The second half began with Waldorf dominating play. A powerful header into the net by David Bantlin, off of a well-flighted corner kick by Peter Foster, gave Waldorf a 2-0 lead. With a well positioned shot inside the far post Martin Luther put the Waldorf team under pressure by scoring their first goal. With Martin Luther fighting to score, the Waldorf goal keeper Chris Smalley made a fantastic 1-on-1 save denying the opponents the opportunity to equalize the score. A brilliant kick to the upper right corner of the net by Jesse Kane, his 32nd goal of the season, gave Waldorf a comfortable 3-1 victory. “It was the very least they deserved after such a wonderful season, proving to themselves and the teams they played that hard work and dedication wins at the end of the day,” said triumphant coach Steve Elliot. On Friday, October 22, Waldorf advanced to the championship game by defeating the Lexington School in a hard-fought semi-final game wining 2-0.
