The Goalbusters, a GU-12 travel soccer team had a match with the Syosset Invasion on Saturday, October 30, 2004 at their home field of St. Paul’s. The Goalbusters and the Invasion took the field for their contest at 10:55 with the sound of the referee’s whistle. The Goalbusters came out strong, pushing the ball into Invasion’s end, taking complete control of the game by maintaining possession. The Goalbusters won 50-50 balls with aggressive play, stripped the Invasion of the ball with good foot skills and kept pressure on the Invasion’s keeper.
The Goalbuster’s substitute goalie, Lauren Williams, played an aggressive game, robbing attempts to score by the Syosset team. At the 38 minute, forward Caroline Tarzian received the ball from a clear out and took the ball up the field on a break-away. Caroline took the ball into scoring range and took a shot that landed in the net, scoring the first goal of the game and making the score 1-0. The Invasion was able to work the ball up the field into the Goalbuster’s 18-yard line. At the 50 minute, a Syosset forward took a wide high lofty shot that clipped the upper left corner of the goal, evening the score at 1-1. Not to worry for it was apparent that the Goalbusters meant business and were determined to leave the contest with a “W” on the scorecard. At the 58 minute, Kelly Reis took the ball from mid-field range and passed it off to Krysta Cento on the wing. Krysta then passed the ball to Kelly, who had positioned herself on the 18-yard line on the right side. Kelly then crossed the ball in front of the goal finding Maria Sokolovich. Maria took the shot and made the score now 2-1. With just minutes left to the game, the Goalbusters were relentless in stealing balls from the Invasion and winning 50-50 balls. The speedy Goalbuster defense kept the ball out of the Goalbuster’s end while the mid-fielders and forwards were successful in pushing the ball into the Invasion’s end. It was hard work but the Goalbusters kept the pressure on the Invasion the entire game. The Invasion is a very good team who kept up equally, challenging every ball and every pass. When the referee’s whistle sounded at 12:05, the Goalbusters earned a “W” with their speed, skills and determination with a score of 2-1.
