GC vs. East Rockaway (13-0)
GC vs. Franklin Square (20-6)
The Garden City Thunder Maroon 10's defeated the East Rockaway Raiders in a battle that featured stifling defense and stellar special teams play by GC. The Garden City defense shut down the East Rockaway offense on their first drive, allowing 0 yards on the kick return and forcing 3-and-out by East Rockaway. After receiving East Rockaway's punt, the GC offense took charge, marching down the field in a methodical 60-yard drive featuring punishing inside runs by the running backs right at the heart of the East Rockaway 6-man front, finally punching it in for a 7-0 lead. The game became a defensive battle after that, as the GC offense moved the ball at will, only to miss golden opportunities with 2 lost fumbles inside East Rockaway's 10 yard line. The GC defense took control, as hard hitting and ferocious tackling held East Rockaway to only 2 runs of greater than 10 yards and 2 first downs all day. Garden City's special teams made a huge contribution to the winning effort, as the kickoff team swarmed East Rockaway all day, holding them to only 15 net yards on kick returns. The game was sealed with a highlight-film punt return by Patric Berkery in which he dodged 5 tacklers before hitting pay dirt with a final lunge into the end zone.
QB M Comiskey makes the pass
On Wednesday night under the lights, Garden City Maroon 10’s faced off against the Franklin Square Warriors. Garden City controlled the game from the opening kick off to the final whistle and defeated Franklin Square 20-6.
Thunder family members "cheer on" their team
Maroon 10’s dominance was due in large part to the effective offensive line providing gapping holes for the running backs. Garden City’s defensive team effectively shut down Franklin Square’s offense. The Warriors tried a number of pass formations, including the double pass, but were mostly unsuccessful. Maroon’s gang tackling and swarming defense held the Warriors to only six points.
Get that ball
The team’s current record is 3-1, but they have a difficult schedule ahead of them. Their offense has to be more aggressive than it has ever been, and defense just has to play smart. We have a talented coaching staff and the players have the skills to keep their momentum going. Great job…and GO THUNDER!
