GC Golden Eagles Stand
Tall In Tough Windsor Tournament
Five games in three days against stiff Division 1 competition. Not the easiest task for an undermanned Garden City Golden Eagles U11 girls soccer team. But the Paul Cody Columbus Day tournament in Windsor, Ct., provided a great opportunity for the team to test itself against premier competition.
Despite bringing just 11 of their own players — the tournament used an 11 v 11 format — the Golden Eagles held their own. Four of the five games ended in a tie. In the fifth contest, Garden City fell to the Massapequa Lil Spirit, 2-0, a game in which the Golden Eagles had many scoring chances and controlled the field for the better part of the game.
The Golden Eagles got some terrific play during the tournament from several players. In particular, Kimberly Ryan was outstanding at center defense and contributed many excellent throw-ins, corner kicks and precise outlet passes.
Ali Rozea shined all weekend, showing speed and versatility in playing offense and defense. Ali scored a pretty goal against South Windsor, ripping off a shot from the right side high into the net.
Gabby Giannone was a worker bee in all five games and created many good offensive plays.
Srey Powers covered the field like a blanket on defense and was involved in the offense and throw-ins.
Catherine Dickinson displayed her usual hustle and showed off her flair for the offense. There were many others who played well as you will read.
With the Golden Eagles trailing, 1-0, at halftime of their opener against the Naugatuck Knockouts, Catherine Dickinson started the second half with a burst of speed down the center that resulted in her blasting home the tying goal. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
In the South Windsor game that followed, after Ali Rozea’s goal tied it at 1-all, the Golden Eagles fell behind, 2-1, at halftime. But about 10 minutes into the second half, Catherine Dickinson scored on a determined effort, and the game ended 2-all.
On Sunday, Garden City opened up against the Division I Massapequa Lil Spirit, and buzzed around the Massapequa end for most of the first half. Christina Mangels and Alexandra Bruno had good scoring attempts. Kimberly Ryan came close when she boomed a shot from inside midfield that carried to the Lil Spirit goal. The keeper was able to reach up and grab it. Gabby Giannone, Caitlin McGuinness, Olivia Donachie and Srey Powers all played well.
The Golden Eagles seemed headed for another tie when Massapequa scored with about 10 minutes to go on an unstoppable shot from the left side. That was the only goal they needed.
Garden City bounced back in the second game against the Monroe Strikers, a team that had defeated Massapequa. This was a hard-fought, sometimes rough affair. In the first half, with Garden City on the attack, Alexandra Bruno scored on a beautiful shot that hit high into the net from 20 yards out, making it 1-0. The Eagles had chances to add to their lead but couldn’t. Monroe later tied it up and on a pretty goal off a throw-in.
The second half was a battle. A Monroe player received a yellow card for clobbering Christina Mangels but Christina got up and continued to play hard-nosed soccer. In the end, Garden City had to withstand some strong offensive thrusts by the Strikers. Keeper Tracy Rendano was brilliant in the clutch, however, making some key stops in the final minute, keeping her poise while Monroe players went for the net. It was a well-earned 1-1 tie.
The finale on Monday was frustrating for the Golden Eagles who totally dominated the Newtown Power, but could not score, as the match ended 0-0. The best chance came when Srey Powers took a penalty kick. The high, rising shot was flagged down by the keeper who made a fine stop. Caitlin McGuinness was a big star in this game and just missed scoring the game winner. Olivia Donachie, who continues to make important contributions, was strong on the defensive end.
Kristen Steinhardt, who battled hard all weekend in the offensive zone, had some good scoring chances against Newtown. The entire team worked tirelessly in all five games and should feel proud of their efforts.
The Golden Eagles would like to thank members of the Garden City Freedom who contributed players in the South Windsor game. And special thanks to Sara Galzarano and Helen Minet for their fine contributions. Sara assisted on one of Catherine Dickinson’s goals.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday with a league game at Levittown. Game time is 11 a.m. On Sunday, Garden City takes on the Jericho Jets in a second round game of the State Cup. The game will be played at St. Paul’s beginning at 10:50 a.m. For information on the team, log onto www.leaguelineup.com/gcgoldeneagles.
