‘Thyroid: The Ups & Downs’

For some seniors, symptoms of changes in weight and appetite, fatigue and depression are not symptoms of aging – they may be symptoms of an underlying thyroid condition. Since the risk of thyroid disease increases with age, protect your health by learning what you need to know about diagnosing and treating thyroid disorders.

Winthrop-University Hospital’s Health Update for Seniors and Their Families community education lecture series will present a free program, “Thyroid: The Ups and Downs” on Wednesday, October 13, 2004, at the Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola. The program begins with blood pressure checks at 1:15 PM, followed by the lecture at 1:45. Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. To reserve a spot, call (516) 663-3916.

Rubens Sievert, MD, Attending Physician in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Winthrop, will discuss the signs and symptoms of thyroid disorders in the senior population, how to know if you should be screened, and the latest advances in treatment. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

Health Update for Seniors is coordinated by the Winthrop Home Health Agency and Geriatric Health Services, part of the Institute for Family Care.
